10 members from the Romsey club attended the Kyushindo Annual Seminar organised by the Oxford area of the KMAA. The event was well run and all of the members enjoyed themselves and came away learning something new. A few of the members performed demonstrations of the 8, 16 step Katas and the Weapons Kata. The photos below show some of the club members involved in sparring, teaching the weapons kata and demonstrating some Katas.

Ron Hancock was asked to provide 4 instructors for the Romsey Festival of Sport. This event gives children the chance to try various sports and we had to show a group of children (and the Mayor of Romsey) basic martial arts for 45 minutes. There were 6 groups of children with about 70 in each group, so we taught them some basic techniques and combinations for 40 minutes and finished off with a demo to show how the techniques were applied.

Ron was invited to attend a Martial Arts training seminar at The Nett, Abingdon on Saturday 8th July. The seminar was run by Mike James and Ian Parfitt (from Bristol) and the session covered both Judo and Karate techniques. Instructors from other Oxford clubs were also in attendance (Phil Clewley, Tony Hulbert and David Gilbert). Ron was asked to demonstrate several techniques which included footwork, 8-step Kata and various self-defence moves. Everybody agreed the training seminar was a great success and was enjoyed by all those who attended.

Ron and Paul attended a Kyushindo seminar at the London club which was also supposed to be the AGM of the KMAA. After a warm up from Danny McCavoy, Peter Brazenor looked at principles of fighting in range and exercises to achieve this. Ron Hancock then showed some techniques practised at the Romsey club. Due to other commitments we had to leave early but the AGM did not take place anyway due to Judo members not being present.

Paul Chapelhow, Alan and Colin Hollyoake from the Romsey club visited the Abingdon club to join in their usual sessions of Judo and Karate. An enjoyable time was had by all under the friendly hospitality of Michael James and the other instructors from the Oxford KMAA area. We were introduced to the formal Judo throws and later in the Karate session were taught and shown Kyushindo No. 6 Kata and the short form of No.7 Kata, which were new to us. There were also demonstrations (for video) given of the Falling Kata, a Broadsword kata based on No.7 and some Bo and Jo Katas.

A Kyushindo seminar was held at the London Club which focused on some lesser known (and practised) Kyushindo techniques. Phil Clewley from Oxford led with fighting from the ground and a few releases. Paul Chapelhow then showed a few takedowns emphasising initial distraction/immobilisation before applying the takedown. Paul Sockett from the London Club then looked at close in attacks before Michael James from Oxford showed integration between Judo and Karate techniques.

The Banstead club under David Frost hosted a seminar and about 25 people attended from the London, Banstead, Oxford, Abingdon and Romsey clubs. After a warm up and basics taken by each of the club instructors, Peter Brazenor from London looked in depth at attack range followed by David Frost focused on what made the Kyushindo approach different. Finally Paul Sockett from London looked at close in defence in a restricted space.

There was a small meeting afterwards and it was agreed that the annual Kyushindo seminar will always be held on the second to last Sunday in September. For this year it will be on the Sunday 23rd September, probably in Abingdon.

The Romsey attendee's were Paul Chapelhow, Alan and Colin Hollyoake and Lizzie Keep
